Why I Run and Runner Bio Paul Whelan:
It has always been an aspiration of mine to run Boston. I’m an avid runner and have competed in several road races for over a decade. In 2016, after several months of training, I ran my first marathon in San Diego in sub-4 hours. While my time did not qualify for Boston, I continued to race and hoped that someday an opportunity like this one would arise. Growing up, I was surrounded by siblings who all ran – some pretty competitively – and I distinctly remember the times my mother would bring us to the Boston Marathon route on Patriot’s Day to cheer on my oldest brother and the rest of the dedicated runners. The energy was invigorating. I remember feeling so proud to see my brother take on the challenge. He led the way for all of us and motivated us to adopt a healthy and fit lifestyle through running. The Boston Marathon has become something even more important since 2013. It reminded me that this isn’t just a race, it’s an honor to take part in this event that people from all over the world admire. I promise to train full-heartedly, represent Hopkinton respectfully, and will not take the opportunity for granted.
